About us
Utility Films is an Isle of Wight-based film
company specialising in high quality, affordable training and information
films on subjects including fire safety training, child protection
and aggression at work. We have a growing reputation and a diverse
client list, and our products are used in business and public service
environments.
Our company name derives from the philosophy of
Jeremy Bentham (1748 - 1832), an English utilitarian philosopher
and social reformer. In his Introduction to the Principles of Morals
and Legislation (1789), he formulated the principle of utility,
which he defined as ‘that property in any object, whereby
it tends to produce benefit, advantage, pleasure, good, or happiness
... or ... prevent the happening of mischief, pain, evil, or unhappiness’.
In Bentham’s view, the gradual improvement
in people’s education would be likely to lead to their making
more rational decisions about what would be for their own long-term
good, and therefore, by definition, to the greater good of society.
Working on that principle, despite the enormous changes in society
since Bentham’s day, we have carried out commissions on a
wide range of subjects including drug use, care-leavers, social
work recruitment, fostering and road traffic accidents in young
people.
We are always ready to discuss commissions
on any subject. Browse our site for more information about the work
we’ve done and read some comments from our clients.
